50 years ago: June 13, 1961

The Cape Girardeau Jaycees have voted to spearhead a drive to pass the $1,598,000 sewer bond issue at the July 11 election; the bond issue is to raise funds to make possible Cape Girardeau's compliance with the federal government's order to cease dumping raw sewage into the river.

Thomas E. Castleman has been advised from Washington that the offer of a partnership of T.A. Uelsmann, H.C. Leiner Jr. and Mrs. June Belk to construct a new post office building at Scott City has been accepted; the new structure, to be located on the north side of Main Street 200 feet east of the present post office, will be leased to the post office department.

75 years ago: June 13, 1936

The Harlem Inn, long a night-life rendezvous for blacks, is about to pass on; the frame building at 402 North St. that houses the restaurant and amusement parlor will be torn down by its new owners, William Vedder and B.C. Hardesty.

Continuing his campaign for governor on the Republican ticket, James J. Barrett of St. Louis is in Cape Girardeau, calling on party leaders.

100 years ago: June 13, 1911

Visiting Missouri druggists are scheduled to arrive here this evening from St. Louis aboard the steamer Grey Eagle; their 33rd annual convention will be called to order at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Academic Hall; preceding the session will be a concert on the campus by the Normal School's military band.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The mill and sheds of the Riverside Lumber Co. of Chaffee are destroyed by fire in the morning.
