Funding for a new veterans home between Cape Girardeau and Jackson and a new visitors center at Trail of Tears State Park, and further financing of the Southeast Missouri State University multipurpose building are included in a capital improvements expenditures measure adopted by the Missouri House.

50 years ago: June 13, 1960

The Rev. Charles Frissell, the son of Mrs. Charles B. Frissell of Cape Girardeau, has been ordained and installed as pastor of the Morganfield Presbyterian Church of Morganfield, Ky.

Cape Girardeau's tax rate will remain $1.33 this year; the city council shifts levies by funds to allow retirement of additional outstanding bonds, but keeps the total rate at the same level maintained the past two years.

75 years ago: June 13, 1935

As the river recedes, City Commissioner Paul R. Brooks and the city health department are faced with the task of cleaning up portions of the city that were inundated; Brooks says Water Street will be washed of considerable mud; a greater problem will be cleaning up the southern part of town, where 65 families were evacuated; health officials are concerned the drinking water in the area may be contaminated.

The Rainbow Room, the Hotel Idan-Ha's new nightclub, and the Likor Store, in the hotel building, enjoyed a substantial patronage last night during their formal opening.

100 years ago: June 13, 1910

The high school department will be moved from the Broadway School building to the Lorimier School building; the latter will be improved and more room made for the convenience of the high school; the move was made necessary by the larger number of high school pupils for the coming year.

Anyone having furnished rooms for rent within three or four blocks of any of Cape Girardeau's hotels that can be let to visiting newspaper people from Wednesday to noon Saturday are asked to notify Will Bergmann; more than 200 editors and writers will be in town for a convention.
