The Cape Girardeau County Court may soon hire an off-duty police officer to patrol the recently opened section of Cape County Park and to enforce fishing regulations at its new lake; commissioners have received several complaints of fishing violations, including violations of age restrictions and catch limits.

The Capaha Park swimming pool, whose opening has been delayed by needed repairs, is slated to reopen either this weekend or Monday depending on the weather.

50 years ago: June 11, 1960

Quick action by Jackson firemen prevented extensive damage to the Lohman Shoe Store in the Jones building Thursday night; however, damage was reported to the apartment above, occupied by Mrs. Odessa Scott, who wasn't at home at the time of the fire.

Lory Stahly, a former combat infantryman who slogged his way through Europe in the bitter winter of 1944-1945 and who came to Cape Girardeau in 1949, is an odds-on choice for the next commander of the American Legion in Missouri.

75 years ago: June 11, 1935

The stage of the Mississippi River is virtually at a standstill here, but no forecast of what it might do in the next day or two is being made pending the result of widespread rains; the river is at 36.35 feet at Cape Girardeau.

Rain and an electrical storm accompanied by a strong wind swept over the district last night, damaging shade and fruit trees and playing havoc with many fields and gardens; precipitation here amounted to 1.4 inches.

100 years ago: June 11, 1910

The Cape Girardeau plant of the St. Louis Oil Co. is about ready for business and should begin operations June 20; there are six large tanks being set in place that will be ready for filling Monday, when the company will begin to arrange for its work of distributing oil products to all points in the districts; delivery wagons will attend to the city trade, and rail and river shipping will care for the trade in other towns; the local plant will be under the management of Louis Simpson.

A.R. Zoelsmann of the Houck railroad auditing department leaves for St. Louis in the afternoon; he and a friend will travel to Germany, where Zoelsmann will visit relatives; the pair will also go to France and Italy.
