Three storms within last week have left Cape Girardeau public works crews scrambling to dispose of downed trees and tree limbs; crews are having to go back over some areas because of two storms Wednesday, which dumped more than inch of rain on city and brought high winds that uprooted trees and damaged power lines; on Friday, severe storm with high winds swept through city, tearing down trees and power lines.
Riverfest '93, in its 15th year in downtown Cape Girardeau, kicks off in afternoon; Christina Brumbaum, 15, of Cape Girardeau, is crowned Miss Riverfest.

Ivan Lee LaTurno, speaks at Grace United Methodist Church in morning; his topic is "Caught in the Middle"; LaTurno and his family arrived in Cape Girardeau this week and will reside in district parsonage, 810 Alta Vista.
Apple Creek, Mo. -- Several generations of families come together to celebrate sesquicentennial of St. Joseph's Parish at Apple Creek, community once called Schnurbusch; Mass of Thanksgiving begins festivities, celebrated by Cardinal John J. Carberry of St. Louis and visiting priests.

Proclamation was issued by Mayor Manning P. Greer and ordinance was passed by city council Wednesday calling special election July 14 to determine if people of Cape Girardeau wish to reorganize their municipal government under city manager statute; election will mark third time residents of Cape Girardeau have voted on council-manager plan.
Free ice program, to enable needy and deserving families to cool milk and other perishables during hot summer months, will be launched Monday by Salvation Army; 30 families will participate at start and probably 50 families later will receive ice; Army has purchased from State College 50 Coolerator-type iceboxes formerly used in veterans housing village operated by college at airport.
75 years ago: June 11, 1928
Henry M. Statler, pioneer resident of Cape Girardeau County, died yesterday at his home mile north of Sedgewickville at age 90; Statler was born May 23, 1838, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Statler, and he lived his entire live in vicinity of Sedgewickville; his wife, former Melvina Hartle, died several years ago.
Advantages in adoption by Cape Girardeau of city plan are pointed out by Lee L. Bowman at meeting of Rotary Club; Bowman, who has been in real estate business here 20 years, points out effects of plan, if it had been adopted many years ago; he urges residents and businessmen to get behind City Plan Commission and aid in laying plans for beautification of city.
