Following the blaze that destroyed Uncle Ralph's Furniture on June 2, owner James Palmer is attempting to rebuild his business in temporary quarters at 109 Independence St.

1964

The 1964 tax books for Cape Girardeau County show an assessment increase of about $3,100,000 over 1963; the final assessment figure for real estate and personal property in the county is $62,460,681, or about 5 percent over last year.

The city of Cape Girardeau has received equipment to be used in the annual battle against mosquitoes; included are one truck-mounted spraying device and two portable sprayers; Happy Hollow, near Merriwether and Frederick streets, is a major source of mosquitoes.

1939

Describing President Roosevelt as a "precedent-breaker," Walter C. Ploeser of St. Louis, prominent leader in Republican circles in Missouri, declared in an address at a picnic of the Cape County Women's Republican Club at Fairground Park last night that "it now seems obvious that his hope is to break the great democratic third term precedent."

The last block on improved Independence Street opens to traffic; it is expected that Independence will become a busy outlet street from downtown, and plans are being made for placing some stop signs on north and south streets that cross Independence.

1914

With 80 percent of the excavation and quarrying completed, the Frisco improvement work on Aquamsi Street in the south end of the city should be completed in about two months; it is possible, however, that three months' time will be necessary for the contractor to tear down the rock bluffs still remaining between Good Hope and Morgan Oak streets.

The Rosetta C. Noeninger building on Good Hope Street is being given a thorough overhauling; a crew starts tearing off the old roof in the morning; the front of the building will also be built somewhat higher.
