50 years ago: June 10, 1959

More and more fringe areas of Cape Girardeau are losing their identity to rapid city expansion; a small lake, built in 1953 on the James Green property at the junction of North Sprigg Street Road and Cape Rock Drive, is being drained; a 23-acre tract, embracing the Green property, has been purchased by A.J. Kinnard, Jerry Eggimann and Richard Binzell for suburban development.

The driver of a large tractor-trailer narrowly escapes serious injury in the evening when his vehicle crashes through the north railing of a bridge over Williams Creek on U.S. 61 seven miles north of Cape Girardeau and overturns in the creek.

75 years ago: June 10, 1934

The Rev. Henry F. Schuermann, Ph.D., D.D., arrived in Cape Girardeau on Friday to take charge of St. Mary's Parish here; he succeeds the Rev. A.V. Nicholas, who departed Monday for St. Thomas, where he hopes to regain his health.

The last service of the pastorate of the Rev. Reinhart Lehmann at Christ Evangelical Church took place this morning; he will leave Friday for Evansville, Ind., where he will assume charge of a new pastorate.

100 years ago: June 10, 1909

A large crowd attended the open house at the new city hall, jail and fire department building at Independence and Frederick streets last night; visitors thrilled to the sight of the big new grays dashing out of the station pulling the new fire wagon behind them; Jack Fowler, volunteer fireman and a jeweler by trade, presented to the big horses solid gold discs 2 inches in diameter, bearing their names, "Alex" and "Joe."

R.W. Clothier, formerly head of the agriculture department at the Normal School, is here looking after his property; he is head of his department at the state university of Arizona at Tucson.
