Two storm systems passing through Cape Girardeau yesterday pelted city with more than inch of rain and brought high winds forceful enough to uproot trees on north end; workers from Union Electric, TCI Cablevision and city's Public Works Department worked for several hours repairing downed power and cable lines and removing fallen trees and branches from roadways.
Central Hardware in Cape Girardeau is one of company's 13 stores that will be closed before year's end during organizational restructuring; more than 1,200 employees will be affected by new management plan, including more than 100 workers at Cape Girardeau store, 271 S. Broadview.

Drive to obtain signatures on initiative petitions calling for vote on Right to Work amendment to Missouri Constitution draws strong opposition from area labor forces; members of labor organizations are out in numbers both in Cape Girardeau and at Jackson in effort to combat Missouri Freedom to Work Committee's efforts to secure more signatures in Missouri's 10th Congressional District.
Construction has started on plant for Havco Wood Products, Inc., newly formed firm for production of laminated hardwood flooring for truck trailers and bodies; plant is located in Harris complex on Nash Road; footings are in place for 20,000-square-foot building; additional storage space of similar size for lumber used in industry is to be provided.
50 years ago: June 10, 1953
Marquees which for 25 years have adorned two main doorways of Marquette Hotel are being taken down to make way for new ones; old marquees have been part of building since it was constructed in 1928; new marquees will be made of stainless steel with neon lettering; work is being done by Haas Construction Co., with neon work by Cape Neon Sign Co.
No relief from oppressive heat is in sight as Cape Girardeau and district swelter through seventh straight day of 90 degree or above temperatures; neither is there any prospect of rain; temperature soared to even 100 degrees yesterday on State College thermometer; readings at other locations in city reached 110.
75 years ago: June 10, 1928
The Rev. William Schroer, associate pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, preaches in morning in church park of Egypt Mills Lutheran church, occasion being annual observance of Mission Festival of church; the Rev. H. Hoyer, pastor of Lutheran Church at Gordonville, preaches at afternoon service.
Contract for construction of two-story, nine-room dwelling in 900 block of Themis street for Mrs. W.C. Patton has been awarded to Roy Barber; building will be of Italian villa style, only one in Cape Girardeau; exterior will be of buff colored stucco, and interior will be designed and tinted to conform with that type of architecture, found along Riviera; Reither and Lindsay, local architects, designed house.
