James A. Haw of Charleston, Mo., wins the championship of the St. Louis spelling bee and will represent this area in the national contest in Washington in June.

The Central High School baseball squad, which recently captured the district title by defeating Sikeston, Mo., will play Perryville, Mo., on Tuesday at Fredericktown, Mo., for the regional championship; members of the team are Gary Wadlington, Howard McGee, Russell Huebel, Roger Wagner, Larry Barnes, Eugene York, Gary Spradling, Lanny Barnes, Robert McBride, Louis Williams, Jesse Bolen, Jack Hawk, Keith Lane, Tim Young, Dean Masterson, Ronald Schlimme, Kent Cargle and Dale Meier.

75 years ago: May 9, 1934

S.P. Lail, county recorder, has filed with the county clerk at Jackson as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for re-election at the August primary.

A new plan by Police Judge G.W. Schack and city officials calls for punishment of Cape Girardeau violators in the form of terms of work on streets or elsewhere when offenders can't raise the cash to pay fines.

100 years ago: May 9, 1909

Cape Girardeau was the mecca of Southeast Missouri athletes during the closing days of last week, when the fourth annual meet was held at the Normal School; 11 records were broken, and all the others, except one, were equaled.

The last 10 acres of school land in Cape Girardeau County were sold at public sale by Sheriff Schade on Wednesday at Jackson; the land belonged to school township No. 7, and the timber on the land was the only desirable thing; John J. Turner was the successful bidder with his offer of $620.
