The Rev. Jonathan Rice is new youth pastor at First General Baptist; he will be assisted in his ministry by his wife, Angie; couple resides in Chaffee; he is music instructor at Delta schools, and she is pursuing degree in child care at Southeast Missouri State University.

Firefighter union representatives and city manager W.G. Lawley will begin their annual face-to-face salary negotiations Thursday nearly $123,000 apart from what city pay plan allows and what firemen have requested; eight-point program has been submitted by Union Local 1084 as basis for talks; request includes 10.9 percent pay increase and improved benefits.

Chaffee, Mo. -- Plans for reorganization of Chaffee School District to include small portion of Kelso-New Hamburg District has run into some opposition; plan would, if approved by voters, place two sections of Kelso-New Hamburg C-7 into Chaffee district.

Newspaper men of district, members of Southeast Missouri Press Association, yesterday selected Cape Girardeau as site of their 1954 meeting and elected Harry E. Guth, publisher of Perry County Republican at Perryville, president at organization's 61st annual meeting at Flat River; invitation to hold convention at Cape Girardeau was extended by publishers of The Missourian, which next year will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

First 19-year-old inductee called up under Selective Service Act in Cape Girardeau County will report with contingent of men to go to St. Louis Tuesday for induction into armed forces; he is Benny L. Wade of Jackson, who, with 10 other men, will report at county Selective Service Board office in H.H. Building Tuesday morning for transportation to St. Louis.

75 years ago: May 9, 1928

Louie Muegge of Lena, Ill., member of 1928 University of Illinois football team, has accepted position as director of athletics at Central High School; he will be graduated from university in June, completing four-year course in athletic coaching and physical education.

Morgan Oak street approach to traffic bridge across Mississippi River is being worked out along lines proposed in original plan submitted by Harland Bartholomew, noted city planner; his plan includes parkways on Morgan Oak, and these have been included in drawings made by city engineer E.L. Sailer and approved by city council.
