Irvin E. Beard, a former highway patrolman who is being strongly considered for the appointment as Cape Girardeau chief of police, meets with police commissioner A. Nenninger and Mayor W.E. Davis; Beard has at least a majority backing of the city council members.

Dr. Raymond A. Ritter has been appointed to head the campaign organization for funds to construct a new building for the First Presbyterian congregation on the site of the present church at Broadway and Lorimier Street.

1939

More than 400 Rotarians and their wives are registered by noon, as the annual district convention opens its first business session at the Broadway Theater.

The last vacancies in the public school faculty are filled by the Cape Girardeau School Board; Elizabeth Bahn of Cape Girardeau is appointed to teach music at Franklin School; Juanita Raynor, who is from Tennessee but is teaching at New Madrid, Missouri, is to teach music and history at John S. Cobb School.

1914

With 24 of the 27 counties of the Normal School's district represented by 375 contestants from 70 high schools, the annual May meet at Cape Girardeau today and tomorrow is the largest ever held; a number of athletes recognized last year are making return performances.

George E. Chappell, while walking about the Buckner-Ragsdale Co. store at the corner of Main Street and Broadway, falls through a trap door in the floor and into the basement, a drop of about 10 feet; his most serious injury is a broken rib on the right side.
