Lawsuits aimed at forcing the desegregation of seven more Southeast Missouri school districts may be brought in federal court; lawsuits already are pending against districts at Charleston and two in Pemiscot County, one centered at Wardell and the other at Deering.

A strike of operating engineers in the St. Louis area has tied up the equipment of Cape Girardeau's sewage treatment system contractor J.E. Latta Construction Co., but a general May 20 start of construction here still is anticipated; because of the strike, the Latta equipment cannot be moved.

John M. Slagle, postmaster at Whitewater for the past 24 years and for many years a prominent merchant there, dies at a Cape Girardeau hospital in the evening.

A contest, in which four young women from Southeast Missouri will be selected as golden trumpeters for Missouri's Golden Troopers, the Cape Girardeau American Legion drum and bugle corps, is being planned; the event will be this summer.

1913

Athletes and sports fans are hoping for clear skies and a warm sun tomorrow and Saturday when the eighth annual athletic meet will be at the fairgrounds; last year's event, preceded by three days of rain, was a muddy display.

The first of the two new summer streetcars, which were recently received from Chicago, went into service yesterday; in its new coat of yellow paint with tasteful decorations, it is a neat and modern-looking car.
