Cape Girardeau Public Schools and Southeast Missouri State University have formed "Cooperative Alliance for Public Education" to focus on long-term strategies for restructuring education; new alliance is announced by Neyland Clark, superintendent of Cape Girardeau Public Schools, and Lenore Bierbaum, dean of College of Education at Southeast.

25 years ago: May 8, 1977

The Rev. Edward Eftink, coordinator of Southwest Regional Catholic School System in Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese, has been named superintendent of Diocesan School Office by Bishop Bernard Law; he will assume his new duties July 1; Sister Mary Philip Hampton, C.D.P., superintendent for past three years, will leave Chancery Staff to assume new responsibilities for her religious community, Sisters of Divine Providence.

Borrowing from philosophical writings of Immanuel Kant, Southeast Missouri State University graduates are told by Ben H. Wells they have duty to use their educational experience to do right; Wells, chairman of board of Seven-up Co. in St. Louis, addresses graduates at Southeast's commencement ceremonies held at Houck Stadium.

50 years ago: May 8, 1952

Bensinger Co. of St. Louis, on bid of $16,908, was awarded contract for kitchen and cafeteria equipment in new Central High School building over field of three other bidders at meeting last night of school board; cafeteria equipment, consisting of 33 separate items, won't be delivered until late fall or early next year.

New Madrid - A $69,500 school bond issue for New Madrid School District carries unanimously at special election, with 139 favoring it; money from bonds will be used to build four-room Negro elementary school of concrete to replace three-room section of old O'Bannon School, which is in poor condition.

75 years ago: May 8, 1927

Mother's Day is observed at most religious services in Cape Girardeau; the Rev. Charles H. Morton at special morning service at First Presbyterian Church speaks on "The Faith of a Mother"; Mothers' Club has charge of morning worship at Centenary Methodist Church, with Claire Evans singing "Mother Machree."

Caruthersville - Birthday picnic turned tragic yesterday, when two young brothers were drowned, one in unsuccessful effort to rescue the other; Dennis Long, 12, died when he attempted to aid his brother, Ewing, 9, while wading at bar pit near Powell Ferry Landing crossing; children are sons of Mr. and Mrs. George Long of Caruthersville.
