An agreement between the city of Cape Girardeau and opponents of its annexation efforts clears the way for an election later this year on the city's annexation plan; the city has agreed to withdraw its plans for the annexation of the northbound land of Interstate 55 from the Cape Girardeau County line southward to near Scott City.

Construction is underway on Bent Creek Golf Course, which will stretch from Interstate 55 to Greensferry Road in Jackson; Jack Litzelfelner of Litz Brothers Realty, developer of the 18-hole, 150-acre course, believes it should be finished by May 1990.

1964

The Southeast Missouri Church of God Ministerial Fellowship dedicates its Home for the Elderly at 705 Cape Road in Jackson; the home, established to provide Christian fellowship for retired and semi-retired persons of all faiths, officially opened April 2, when Flossie Clark of East Prairie, Mo., became its first resident.

A church collection of undetermined amount of money is stolen from St. Vincent's Catholic Church, 150 S. Spanish St., after the 6 a.m. Mass; the money in two bags is taken from a cabinet just outside the west door of the church; in addition, there is an attempted break-in at the General Baptist Church, 200 Broadway.

1939

A check-up on the ownership of all lots in the city-owned Fairmount Cemetery has been ordered by the City Council upon Mayor Edward L. Drum's report that some people contend other families had made burials on spaces they didn't own; in one case, two families believe they own the same space; in another instance, a person maintains that a body has been moved.

Establishment of a Physicians' and Surgeons' Exchange is announced by Mrs. M.E. Sander; under the plan, doctors leaving their offices will notify the exchange where they may be reached; their incoming telephone calls will be transferred to the exchange, where Sander will take the calls and locate the doctors.

1914

The first baseball game of the season, played by the Capahas and a team from Jackson at the fairgrounds, ends in victory for the Caps by a score of 11-2; the Caps completely outplay the county seat boys from start to finish.

Ina Daugherty of Egypt Mills won first place in the spelling match at the rural schools contest yesterday; Clarence Weis of Randol School won first in the B class, and Jesse Walls and Rudy Froemsdorf, both of Egypt Mills, tied for first place in the C class.
