Reassessment in Cape Girardeau County will cost an estimated $869,590, according to a reassessment plan approved by the county court; if the plan is OK'd by the State Tax Commission, reassessment work would begin July 1, with the hiring of a chief appraiser and a secretary.

Jackson voters Tuesday will decide the fate of a $500,000 bond issue to help finance the construction of a new police and fire complex to be located at the highways 61, 25 and 34 intersection.

50 years ago: May 29, 1955

The centennial of Grace Methodist Church, observed at various services for the past week, is brought to a close with worship at the church at the regular hour, a basket dinner at noon at Arena Park and an afternoon service in the Arena Building; preaching at the afternoon service is the Rev. Robert C. Holliday, pastor of Centenary Methodist Church.

The first graduates of the new Cape Girardeau Catholic High School hear a commencement address by the Most Rev. Charles H. Helmsing, auxiliary bishop of St. Louis, at St. Mary's Church.

75 years ago: May 29, 1930

The Cape Girardeau traffic bridge across the Mississippi River has shown an actual profit of $17,275.12 above operating expenses since it was opened to traffic in October 1928, according to figures made public by the Cape Girardeau Bridge Co.

Memorial Day will be observed appropriately in Cape Girardeau tomorrow with a partial suspension of business and a program arranged by patriotic organizations; memorial services at Courthouse Park, the Mississippi River bridge and Old Lorimier Cemetery are expected to be attended by hundreds who will pay tribute to the dead war heroes.

100 years ago: May 29, 1905

The school board meets and selects the following teachers for the next school year: superintendent Fred L. McChesney; May Greene, Jennie McKee, Nellie Woody, Anita Bohnsack, Elma Buehrmann, Linda Williams, Alma Juden, Elsie Dotson, Alice P. Carroll, Marguerite Machen, Edna J. Smith, Mathilda Whitelaw, Julie Nettles, Mae Lucky and Jennie Cook; the only change of importance is in the principal of Jefferson School, where Lucky will replace W.H. Haupt.

Decoration Day will be observed tomorrow; decorating graves in all cemeteries will be conducted in the morning by the Sons of Veterans.
