Official with Gordonville-Dutchtown Public Water District Number Four says district's second water well should be in operation by late summer; Jerry Lorberg, president of district's board of directors, says drilling of new well began about two weeks ago on tract of land near Highway 25.

Several area highway projects, including Mississippi River bridge, received major boost this week when U.S. House of Representatives passed National Highway System authorization bill.

25 years ago: May 28, 1979

Memorial Day. Cape Girardeau Joint Veterans Council sponsors service at Memorial Park, with Lt. Col. Lloyd Young, executive officer of 135th Engineers' Group, as main speaker; Will Wade is guest speaker for American Legion-sponsored event at Jackson City Cemetery; Wade is nine-year veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict, having served in both Army and Navy.

Predictions of gasoline shortages keep some motorists at home over holiday weekend, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol; but fears of drivers stranded with empty fuel tanks don't materialize.

50 years ago: May 28, 1954

Cape Girardeau Rural Fire Protection Association was disbanded yesterday after meeting Wednesday night with fire department officials at Station 1; dissolution came after city attorney Gerald B. Rowan ruled that setup in effect since its organization was illegal; association members paid dues and contracted with Cape Girardeau to answer fire calls to property of members.

Central High Tigers down McKinley High Goldbugs of St. Louis 9-8 in 11 innings at Busch Stadium; win advances Tigers to state high school baseball championship game Saturday with Lutheran High Crusaders of St. Louis.

75 years ago: May 28, 1929

For first time in 10 weeks, Mississippi River at Cape Girar-deau falls below flood stage; stage in morning is 30.2 feet.

Model home, furnished completely through cooperation of various Cape Girardeau merchants, will be presented in Cape Girardeau in recently completed residence belonging to Jules Reither, local architect, on West Themis.
