In an attempt to control the growth of a weedlike algae that has covered most of the lagoon at Capaha Park, Al Hoskin, field service agent for the Missouri Conservation Commission, yesterday sprayed a small section of the pond; it is expected to kill the algae in two or three days, with only slight kill of fish; other sections will be sprayed on a regular schedule.

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- A fire across the street from the St. Francois County Courthouse does approximately $300,000 damage; the big P.N. Hirsch Co. store is at the center of the blaze.

1939

It is learned through Sen. J.C. McDowell of Charleston, Missouri, that Gov. Lloyd C. Stark will appoint Judge I.R. Kelso of Cape Girardeau as a member of the Teachers College Board of Regents.

The J.L. Jones Confectionery, 713 Broadway, reopens for business; remodeling and some painting have been done on the interior; the business has been closed since Thanksgiving Day, after the usual custom of closing during the winter months and opening up in the summer; J.L. Jones and his son, Otis, are the proprietors.

1914

Loren Starr Joseph, former cashier of First National Bank of Cape Girardeau, dies in the North Shore Sanitarium at Winnetka, Illinois; Joseph, who had been ill with dropsy for a long time, was a man who lived within his family; he seldom mixed in social life and was of a disposition that attracted few close associates; but to those who knew him intimately, he was a most charming character; he is survived by his mother, wife and daughter.

The Allison-Bremermann Co. of upper Broadway, long established as the Toggery, has been incorporated J.M. Allison, Hattie Allison and Herman Bremermann.
