The city of Cape Girardeau has received a $681,660 federal Department of Transportation grant for improvements to the municipal airport, including acquisition of about four acres to extend the safety area on runway 10.

Young musicians from throughout the district will be on the State College campus in June for the first ever summer band camp, sponsored by the Southeast Missouri High School Band Association and managed by the music department of the college.
Ray Ripplemeyer, pitcher for the Atlanta Club of the Southern Association, hurled his club to a 9-0 victory over the New Orleans Club, in which he allowed six hits, fanned five, walked four and hit a home run and a single to drive in two runs.
75 years ago: May 27, 1933
There apparently will be a large number of applications for both the presidency and deanship of Teachers College; among the applicants for the presidency are Dr. W. Parker of Alva, Okla., and Dr. Homer E. Cooper of New York City; those seeking the deanship include Dr. Henry W. Olson, formerly of the college faculty here, and Dr. W.T. Miller of Ohio.
Sale of the Hotel Marquette property is halted a few hours before it was to be placed on the auction block by the filing in federal court of a petition of involuntary bankruptcy against the hotel company; the action was instituted by the Sturdivant Bank.
100 years ago: May 27, 1908
Preparations for the proper observance of Decoration Day on Saturday have been made by the Sons of Veterans; speeches will be made by W.G. Kitchen of Bloomfield, Mo., and F.L. Withaupt of Cape Girardeau; the Sons and the Ladies' Auxiliary will decorate the graves of veterans.
Whitewater is visited by the worst conflagration in many years; the blaze starts in the rear of the saloon operated by L.R. Gillilan and quickly spreads to adjoining structures.
