Leo B. Jackson of Columbia is elected district governor in closing sessions at Cape Girardeau of the three-day meeting of the Eighth District, Optimist International; the convention ends near noon with a registration of 325, the largest in district history.

Magistrate M.E. Montgomery of Scott County has been designated by Circuit Judge Marshall Craig of Sikeston, Mo., to serve as acting magistrate of Cape Girardeau County from June 3 to 21; during that time, Magistrate Roland G. Busch will be on his annual vacation.

75 years ago: May 24, 1934

Filing of a foreclosure petition in federal court by the bondholders' perspective committee to force the sale of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge is expected soon, says Judge C.A. Vandivort, receiver; the bondholders' committee has about 75 percent of the $1,000,000 first mortgage bonds in its possession and filing of the petition may be expected in the near future.

Olaf Robertson ends his career as coach of athletics at Central High School, a position he held for three years; succeeding him is Louis Muegge.

100 years ago: May 24, 1909

Conductor Bob Phillipson of St. Louis has been in town for several days looking after his property; it is said he will probably sell his nice home on North Frederick Street.

A large audience attends the second concert given by Nora Naeter's advanced music pupils; a 40-voice chorus opens the program with two delightful numbers; instrumental solos are performed by Clara Miller, Maude Ringer, Jane Cramer, Verna Day, Celeste O'Bannon and Amy Nelle Henderson.
