Status of Missouri Department of Revenue license fee offices in Cape Girardeau and Jackson is still uncertain; aides to Gov. Mel Carnahan are deliberating over what to do with 165 patronage offices around state; since Christopher Bond was elected to second term in 1980, offices in these two cities have been operated by respective chambers of commerce; but, with new governor, status of offices is up in air.

Thousands of senior citizens dance, play bingo and enjoy Senior Fun Fest in Cape Girardeau; more than 3,000 seniors from all over region attend event, offered free every other year.

Rain and unseasonably cool weather have delayed planting of spring crops in area, but headway was made during good weather the past week, farmers say; in Cape Girardeau and surrounding counties, farmers are in midst of planting corn about a week behind schedule, and some soybeans are being planted.

Work resumes on Jackson High School renovation project following brief strike by Laborers Local 282; pickets appeared on job Wednesday morning and were removed Thursday, but work doesn't start up again until today; strike, according to Local 282 official, was aimed at Cam Electric Co. of Jackson, sub-contractor on $900,000 project.

50 years ago: May 22, 1953

Central High School seniors - last class from old building - had their graduation fling last night, a post-commencement affair at Memorial Hall that brought group together for last time; it was planned by parents of graduates as frank move to provide them with entertainment to their liking in home atmosphere rather than on highways and in night clubs of area.

Preliminary examination of books of Local 574, A.F.L. Teamsters and Chauffeurs Union, has failed to disclose any irregularities, representative of International Union now conducting affairs of local says; J.R. Braddock Jr. of Indianapolis, general manager and auditor for union, was named to act as trustee after federal grand jury indicted business agent of local on charges of attempted extortion.

75 years ago: May 22, 1928

Reviving memories of nearly 50 years ago, former teachers and students of Teachers College come back to do honor to institution which for 55 years has served this district; visitors meet at college during day to renew acquaintances and friendships of many years ago; banquet is held in evening at Houck Field House.

J.E. Kirkpatrick, 32, steelworker for American Bridge Co., suffers badly mangled right arm shortly before noon, when wheel of car, used to transport steel from Missouri end of bridge to traveler at point of construction, passes over his arm; he is in serious condition; this is first permanent injury case reported on bridge.
