Missionary and teacher Dr. Eugene Bunkowske is the featured speaker at the Mission Sundays of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Jackson and Christ Lutheran Church at Gordonville; Bunkowske is professor and director of missions at Concordia Theological Seminary at Fort Wayne, Ind.

Officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration tour flood-damaged areas of Cape Girardeau with city officials as the process of assessing the damage continues in the aftermath of the worst flooding here in at least 30 years.

50 years ago: May 18, 1961

Construction of the second planned unit of the new Atlas Plastics Products Co., 229 Broadview, is expected to be completed about June 1; Stanley Chase, president of the firm, says completion of the 60-by-100-foot addition will allow transfer of small forming and fabricating machinery to it from the original building; space left by the transfer will be utilized by a large extruding machine that arrived last week.

Members of the River Hills Garden Club are creating a formal garden on the site of the old swimming pool in Capaha Park; the old pool was filled in and the club designed the attractive layout.

75 years ago: May 18, 1936

Names of 4,865 children of school age are in the annual school enumeration list completed and reported to County Clerk Edwin L. Kies; the total is 113 under the figure for a year ago.

Harold Nations, 421 Broadway, says he has purchased the streetcar now on a lot on Broadway east of Middle Street from Harl Haas; the latter had planned to rebuild the car into a cafe; Nations says he will move the trolley to his farm near Morley, Mo., and make it a henhouse.

100 years ago: May 18, 1911

J.B. Ricards of Joseph & Ricards of Cape Girardeau leaves in the afternoon for Atlanta, where he is building the first section of the Atlanta & Carolina Railroad; it is a new road that will be about 200 miles in length.

The Toggery, which opened just over a year ago in a store on Broadway, is moving to a building just across the street from its present location.
