Scholarship honoring granddaughter of member of Southeast Missouri State University's first Board of Regents has been presented by Mission, Texas, man; Lynton B. Russell, husband of late Lucile Farrar Russell, has given southeast $20,000 to endow home economics scholarship in name of his wife; her father was Dr. G.W. Farrar.

Discussions between city of Cape Girardeau and its employees over salaries and fringe benefits for next fiscal year were initiated yesterday, with first informal session between City Manager W.G. Lawley and representatives of fire department; discussion is part of annual process of preparing each fiscal year's budget.

50 years ago: May 17, 1952

Perryville - Estate of late G.S. Hatch, which includes most of town of Seventy-six, has been put up for sale by heirs; 800-acre tract includes old Hatch orchard, at one time one of biggest in Missouri; in addition to orchard, Hatch ran general store, operated boat landing and had large timber operations with practically whole population of Seventy-six in his employ.

Naval Air Reserve bombers and fighters take part in Armed Forces Day observance, even though nationwide shortage of high-octane gasoline prevents Air Force and Navy jet planes from attending; Navy Able Mable attack bombers and F8F Bearcat fighters flown by Cape Girardeau aviators fly over as part of their monthly training flight; Navy Reserve and National Guard units also set up displays at airport and on parkway opposite Frisco Railroad passenger station.

75 years ago: May 17, 1927

First National Bank and city of Cape Girardeau have reached agreement on city taxes, which bank had refused to pay pending settlement of test case in federal court, and bank has tendered to city $276.85 in payment for taxes for 1925 and 1926; similar agreement has been reached with county court.

City council, without dissenting vote, yesterday adopted motion to donate $50 to Civic Improvement Association, money to be used in purchase of plants and shrubs to beautify city property; city street department will do all the work on city property.
