Two-year, off-and-on search for names for two city parks concluded Wednesday with judging of entries in Spring Alive Campaign's "Name the Parks" contest; two parks, which have been known only as north park and south park, will now be called Cherokee Park and Shawnee Park, respectively; names still need to be approved by city council.
Four hundred saddle, walking and western type horses, their owners and trainers, from five-state area are expected to converge on Arena Park tomorrow for opening of Kiwanis Club's seventh annual Charity Horse Show; horsemen will be competing for $3,000 in prize money, plus trophies and ribbons.

Dr. Homer R. Bolen, professor of biological sciences, has been appointed head of science department at State College by Board of Regents, succeeding Dr. A.C. Magill, who will retire July 1 with title of professor emeritus of science; Bolen has been on college faculty since 1925, except for four-year leave of absence.
Mayor Manning P. Greer says city is discussing with State Board of Health feasibility of repairing swimming pool in Capaha Park to meet health standards and reopen it this summer; in informal talk before Junior Chamber of Commerce yesterday, Greer said city is trying to decide whether it would be more practical to repair old pool or to build new one.
75 years ago: May 13, 1927
Poplar Bluff - Grief-stricken Poplar Bluff pauses from its work of reconstruction to conduct joint memorial service at Butler County courthouse square; services are for 105 victims of Monday's tornado and are conducted under supervision of ministerial alliance; hundreds of people gather at square, sans poplar trees that until Monday made it beauty spot of town, and with uncovered heads pay their last respects to dead.
Bravery of Gerald Voelker, 18, late yesterday saved life of Cleo Jones, 8, when youngster fell from railroad trestle into creek in Red Star suburb; plunging into stream after he heard boy's scream, Voelker rescues Jones after he had gone under two times.
