After consultation with the board of regents, Southeast Missouri State University president Dr. Bill W. Stacy says the university will continue with preliminary construction work on the multipurpose building project and will assume, for now, architectural and first-phase construction contract costs.

BENTON, Mo. -- Rick L. Roberts, an environmental engineer with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, says he will recommend the Scott County landfill be closed, a move which would leave the county without an acceptable means of trash disposal.

50 years ago: April 8, 1960

An additional half foot of water on the Mississippi River, but no change in the crest date, is forecast; under the new prediction, the river at Cape Girardeau will rise to 38.5 feet next Wednesday, barring excessive rain in the upper watershed.

75 years ago: April 8, 1935

The Industrial Securities Co. of Toledo, Ohio, submits a bid of $850,000 for the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge at the close of an hour of heated bidding at noon; the sale remains to be approved by the federal court, which ordered the sale at the request of petitioning bondholders.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jones take charge of the Good Hope Hotel, 600 Good Hope St., following purchase of it from Rollie Ervin.

100 years ago: April 8, 1910

The fire department is called to L.H. Graessle's store on Broadway to extinguish a blaze that started on the second floor; some plumbers installing bathroom fixtures in the Odd Fellows' lodge rooms on the second floor cause the fire, but it is put out before the fire boys arrive.

Martin Oberheide, who will manage the baseball Capahas this season, requests all players be out to the grounds Sunday afternoon for a tryout.
