St. Louis County executive Gene McNary and Missouri Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, the two Republican candidates for Missouri governor, trade barbs at the annual Lincoln Day event held in the evening at the Arena Building; about 500 people are in attendance.

Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary observed its 25th anniversary with a banquet last night at Ramada Inn; musical guests were soloist Czeslaw Zielinski and pianist Gary Miller.

50 years ago: April 7, 1959

The State Highway Department announces that numbers of highways 70 and 55 will be changed; the new interstate highways will use those numbers.

Voters put two new men in office as directors of the Cape Girardeau School District and give overwhelming endorsement to continuance of a 25-cent tax levy for teacher purposes in the school election; Dr. Hugh V. Ashley Jr. and Willard Wagner are elected to the school board.

75 years ago: April 7, 1934

Petitions addressed to the Cape Girardeau School Board asking that a new public school building be constructed at the north end of the Red Star suburb are being circulated in that neighborhood.

Construction has been started on marine ways, which the Cape Foundry & Machine Works will build at the river's edge in Cape Girardeau, says Eddie Erlbacher; the equipment is to be built from the bank into the river and affords a means of lifting boats for repairing or rebuilding.

100 years ago: April 7, 1909

Voters in Cape Girardeau yesterday split city offices between the Industrial and Citizens' tickets; the Industrial ticket elected M.E. Leming as mayor and R.H. Whitelaw as city attorney; the other offices were filled from the Citizens' ticket: Willis Martin, marshal; Rudolph Bahn, police judge; W.H. Huters, assessor; Edward Willer, Collector; W.H. Coerver, treasurer, and city councilmen, J.A. Juden, A. Brunkhorst, George Meyer and D.A. Glenn.

The election at Jackson passed quietly yesterday, a light vote being polled; Judge W.B. Schaefer won the mayoral race.
