Whitewater fire chief Wes Blumenberg says he is convinced a small tornado touched down yesterday evening at the home of his mother, Maria Blumenberg, on Route A approximately 2 miles east of Whitewater; he was in his pickup making a severe-weather report to the Cape County Emergency Operations Center in Jackson when the storm nearly turned his truck over.

Voters in the Jackson School District approve a 78-cent tax levy increase by 1,618 votes to 1,156 votes; the increase will be used to construct $5 million worth of new learning facilities for students in the school district.

Dolores Glastetter and Toni Walder placed first and second respectively in the 12th annual Missourian Regional Spelling Bee, held yesterday in the Central High School auditorium; Glastetter of St. Mary's Grade School in Cape Girardeau and Walder of St. Joseph's School in Cairo, Ill., will represent Southeast Missouri in the area spelling bee in St. Louis soon.

A senate made up of faculty members of State College will soon be formed to "provide an avenue for faculty expression," announces Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of the college.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau Democrat S.P. Dalton is named as a commissioner of Division One of the State Supreme Court for a four-year term starting April 12; he succeeds Charles L. Ferguson of Doniphan, Mo.

Cape Girardeau County WPA projects will lose 47 workers later this week, when the rolls are reduced in a statewide spring change; it will reduce the 519 total men and women to 472 people.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The board of aldermen has passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale, firing, loaning, giving away or having in possession, within the city limits, of any firecracker, skyrocket, Roman candle, toy pistol, cannon cracker or any other kind of fireworks; anyone violating the ordinance may be fined up to $100.

Cape Girardeau's drinking water turned cloudy overnight; it is found that a mud bar just south of Cape Rock and just north of the intake pipe is washing away, resulting in muddy water being pumped into the settling basins.
