Demolition of the old Florsheim Shoe factory building at 700 N. Main St., owned by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, has stopped; D. and R. Demolition Co. of Cairo, Ill., which is taking down the structure brick by brick, has discovered asbestos inside.
The state is considering constructing a raised median on a section of Kingshighway in an effort to reduce the heavy traffic congestion; the move would prevent motorists from turning left to enter the commercial area on the west side of Kingshighway between William and Independence streets.
City officials and those of J.E. Latta Construction Co. of St. Louis have agreed that work on Cape Girardeau's sewage disposal system will begin April 22; the city has contracted with the Latta to complete the job by mid-July 1964.
The Cape Girardeau Board of Education reorganizes, naming J.J. Russell president of the board; he was re-elected Tuesday, as was newcomer Robert J. Stiegemeyer; named vice president is Dr. Hugh V. Ashley Jr.
A.M. Spradling, local attorney, announces he has purchased the two-story, nine-room brick residence at 1304 Broadway, formerly owned by the late Dr. J.F. Riddle; Spradling is having the interior remodeled; he and his family will occupy the house.
With indications for a record vote, Cape Girardeans will march to the polls tomorrow to elect a mayor and three commissioners for the city council, select two members of the board of education for the public schools, and approve the usual $1 levy for school purposes.
The county court at Jackson yesterday took up the application made by W.J. Seagraves for a license to conduct a saloon on Water Street, between Themis and Broadway; for three hours, attorneys argued the case; finally, the court was shown that the petition didn't have enough qualified signatures and the liquor license was denied.
The Jackson Real Estate Co. was organized this week for the purpose of doing a general real estate business in this county and others; officers are John P. Mabrey, president; C.A. Vandivort, secretary; Alvin Boss, treasurer, and C.W. Henderson, L.A. Goodwin, Edward D. Hays, Henry Puls and A.D. Milde, directors.
