As part of a two-day training session for Southeast Missouri law enforcement officers, members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms concluded the seminar with a bang yesterday, detonating two car bombs in the rural area north of Millersville; flames shot 50 feet into the sky.

50 years ago: April 4, 1962

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In solemn pontifical Mass yesterday, the Rev. Charles H. Helmsing was installed as bishop of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Roman Catholic Diocese; previously, he served as bishop of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese.

Cape Girardeau School District voters have returned Dr. H.V. Ashley Jr. and Walter H. Oberheide to the school board; in addition, voters yesterday approved the $1.35 tax levee in light balloting.

75 years ago: April 4, 1937

The fourth anniversary of the establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps is celebrated with an open house at the CCC camp in Delta.

The Jackson baseball club, which has been managed the past three years by Al Kieninger, will be under the guidance of William McGuire this year; Jackson will play independent ball again this season.

100 years ago: April 4, 1912

Members of the Commercial Club meet in the morning to discuss how Cape Girardeans can aid the flooded district to the south; the mayors of Cairo, Ill., Thebes, Ill., Hickman, Ky., Columbus, Ky., and Charleston, Hayti, Caruthersville, New Madrid, Portageville and Lilbourn in Missouri are contacted by telephone with offers of help.

A.H. Oberbeck, a prominent farmer on Rural Route 3, on Perryville Road, has just completed a fine barn; he plans to christen the building with a barn dance Monday night.
