Mary L. Spell, Family Living editor of the Southeast Missourian, has been named director of public relations at Saint Francis Medical Center.

50 years ago: April 30, 1960

Agents for the State Highway Department likely will begin obtaining rights of way for the new Interstate 55 from Weiss Park north to the Perry County line in the next few months; agents are now at work obtaining rights of way for the super highway from Weiss Park through Cape Girardeau County.

Preliminary estimated figures of the 1960 census show that the 11 Southeast Missouri counties in the 10th Congressional District have lost 38,325 in population in the last 10 years.

75 years ago: April 30, 1935

The Federal Emergency Relief Administration staff for the county will take over administration of the portion of the relief that has been handled by the Central Relief Organization tomorrow; a fund of $375 still in the hands of the C.R.O. is transferred to Judge Charles G. Wilson and City Commissioner Paul R. Brooks, representing the County Court and Cape Girardeau city, respectively.

Paving of the drive around Southeast Missouri Hospital and of Lacy Street in front of the facility should be completed tomorrow.

100 years ago: April 30, 1910

The nice weather makes the merchants downtown miss the ferryboat; had a boat been running, a great many wagons from the Illinois side would have been here.

The firm of Glenn & Co., real estate agents, is opening offices in the Houck Building on Main Street; the firm is composed of David A. Glenn, the merchant and banker who is known to every man woman and child in this part of the state, and his son, Garrett Glenn.
