Area disaster agencies are closely monitoring rivers and steams as a vast storm system moves in before dawn; some flash flooding occurs west of Cape Girardeau, and flooding on some county streams appears imminent.
Two Jackson banking organizations have filed applications with state and federal authorities to establish banks in Cape Girardeau; First Exchange Corporation, holding company for Jackson Exchange Bank and Trust Co., seeks to build a bank in the 100 block of Broadview Street; Cape County Bank of Jackson has applied for a charter for a Cape Girardeau Bank as well as for establishment of a multi-bank holding company that would own both the Cape Girardeau and Jackson institutions.

A school election on May 20 for authority to issue $700,000 in building bonds to finance construction of a new elementary school, do repair work on existing buildings and set up a reserve fund was announced to members of a Citizens Advisory Committee at Junior High School last night.
A plan of orderly parking for the cobblestone wharf on Water Street won approval of the Cape Girardeau City Council last night.
75 years ago: April 29, 1933
Teachers for the Illmo schools will serve next year on reduced salaries and will hold contracts for only six months; however, an effort will be made to hold a nine-month school; teachers are principal Noel Hansel, Opal Bertram, Fern Anderson, Mrs. Fred Craig, Elizabeth Waller, Kathryn Bowers, Lucy Fullerton and Anna Albrecht.
County Assessor-elect J. Doyle Summers and his wife have purchased a residence at 1613 Broadway and moved in yesterday.
100 years ago: April 29, 1908
W.G. Kitchen, postmaster of Bloomfield, Mo., and prominent lawyer, visits Cape Girardeau; he tells friends that he will give up the post office in order to devote his entire time to campaigning for Congress.
A special school meeting is held at the school house in the Clippard district, three miles south of Oak Ridge, to decide on the proposition to build a new school house; the plan to borrow $900 for this purpose is defeated by a vote of 16 to 15.
