A federal mortgage interest subsidy program that hasn't been employed in Cape Girardeau County for about 10 years is being revived through efforts of a local builder who plans to erect 26 homes, half in Cape Girardeau and half in Jackson; Harold Sinn says the project is the only way many residents of moderate income are able to buy new houses.

The defensive coordinator at Northwestern University the past three years, Bruce Hoffman, has been named assistant football coach at Southeast Missouri State University; Hoffman is a 1970 graduate of Southeast.

50 years ago: April 29, 1956

Progress is being made on the extensive remodeling work in the kitchen and dining room of Centenary Methodist Church; Glenn Bishop is the contractor; in connection with the work, air conditioning is being placed in the church.

The new post home of the American Legion in Jackson is dedicated in a public ceremony in the afternoon; Harry C. Blanton of Sikeston, Mo., past department commander, gives the dedication address.

75 years ago: April 29, 1931

Fred Shields, milk inspector for the Missouri State Health Department, is assisting Cape Girardeau health officer W.D. Blank and Commissioner Phillip Steck in an inspection of dairies which supply milk for private consumption in Cape Girardeau; up to last night, 26 dairies in the area had been inspected, and others will be looked at over the remainder of the week.

Workers begin remodeling the front and interior of the two-story brick building at 520 Broadway occupied by the Square Deal Variety Store, of which C.H. Shively is proprietor.

100 years ago: April 29, 1906

At the German Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, H.C. Haman reads a sermon in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. Theodore Ludwig, who has gone to Gordonville.

Today is a great day for Catholics in Cape Girardeau; nearly 1,000 Catholics from St. Louis, Murphysboro, Ill., Cairo, Ill., Caruthersville, Mo., and other points in this part of the country descend on Cape Girardeau; the reason for this large gathering is the formation of a local order of the Knights of Columbus.
