Heading Cape Girardeau, a group of high school students sees first hand how city government operates; 18 juniors, nine each from Notre Dame and Cape Central high schools, are spending the day with city officials and department heads during the fourth annual Optimist Youth City Government Day.

Motorists have an unusual roadway companion as a house travels the streets of Cape Girardeau; traveling up to 10 mph, the house is moved from the 1400 block of North Kingshighway to North Main Street by Johnson Moving Co. of Sikeston, Mo.

50 years ago: April 28, 1962

Work along the 15.5-mile route of Interstate 55 between Fruitland and Scott City has returned to full motion after the winter layoff; Irvin H. Garms, president of Potashnick Construction Co., Inc., says grading the still somewhat muddy roadbed resumed about 10 days ago.

Two Sikeston, Mo., girls, friends who reside within a block of each other, are winner and runner-up in The Missourian Spelling Bee held at Central High School; Martha Bess wins the contest, while Mary Beth Leible comes in second.

75 years ago: April 28, 1937

While entertaining Dr. C. Oscar Johnson, distinguished St. Louis minister, here yesterday, Judge I.R. Kelso called in a few local friends and pressed his request for a tabernacle meeting to be conducted by Johnson and Homer Rodeheaver; for a long time, Kelso has been trying to interest Johnson in such a meeting, believing he could duplicate the great meeting held here in 1926 by the late Billy Sunday and Rodeheaver.

A new building to house Campbell Mattress Co. is nearing completion on South Hanover Street, just south of Independence; the building replaces an old frame structure.

100 years ago: April 28, 1912

BENTON, Mo. -- Construction of a new $10,000 Methodist church will be started about the first of May, according to the pastor, the Rev. J.C. Denton; the building will be of pressed buff brick, which resembles marble; Moore and Beasley of Campbell, Mo., are the contractors.

The Rev. J.F. Lawson begins his work as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau.
