Dr. Irving L. Smith, superintendent of the Enid District of the United Methodist Churches in Oklahoma and former Cape Girardeau resident, preaches in the morning and evening at Grace United Methodist Church; at the evening service, he portrays the Biblical character Jonah.

Youths of First Baptist Church take responsibility for the services at the church in observance of Youth Week; the sermon is preached by Greg Deimund as youth pastor.

50 years ago: April 28, 1960

Jackson showed a population gain in the past decade of 1,174, as it attained this year a census count of 4,871.

David Goldberger, a member of the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York City and formerly of Memphis, Tenn., is serving as judge for the annual piano auditions that begin at St. Mary Cathedral School and will continue through Saturday; about 50 student musicians are participating in the auditions, under the auspices of the National Guild of Piano Teachers.

75 years ago: April 28, 1935

The reshaping of terraces on the east side of Courthouse Park has brought into view a number of native stones immediately south of the main walk leading to the courthouse and within a few feet of Spanish Street; the massive, attractive stones are of the same type as larger outcroppings along Main Street, a short distance north of Broadway.

Pounding out 12 hits, the Jungle Giants open the baseball season by defeating the Jackson All-Stars, 9-0 on the Jackson field; Elam Vangilder, former major- and minor-league pitcher, and Benny Brinkopf divide the mound work for the Giants.

100 years ago: April 28, 1910

Lovers of music have a treat in store in May, as arrangements are being completed for two days of the May Festival; on May 10, Charles Gounod's "Gallia" will be rendered and the beautiful composition will be given by singers who are well known to Cape Girardeau's music lovers; the following day, the children's fete will take place and will feature the talents of the town's young people.

St. Vincent's Convent has purchased the Burroughs estate's half interest in the property at 218 S. Sprigg St.
