Full-time students will be paying more than $5,000 to live on campus and attend Southeast Missouri State University for 1992-93 academic year; that cost has climbed by more than $3,000 over past 10 years, university budget figures show; student leader K.C. Martin believes cost to students is too high.

In special meeting, city's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommends number of fee increases aimed at making city recreation programs operate nearly "in the black"; city council will consider latest fee increases, along with earlier recommended fee hikes for city's swimming pools and municipal golf course, when it approves new budget in June.

Five longtime volunteers with Girl Scouting received Otahki Council's highest honor last night at annual appreciation dinner; Thanks Badge, highest award in adult Scouting, went to Patsy Johnson of Jackson, Mrs. James R. Stricker of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. Joe P. Rice of Chaffee, Loretta Moeckel of Perryville and Mrs. Lawrence Breeze of Cape Girardeau.

"We might as well quit trying to be a good fire department and go to being volunteers," upset Fire Chief Charles F. Mills says about proposals to eliminate Missouri's present 10-point fire rating scale; Mills says department worked hard to get down to Class 5, which resulted in lower insurance premiums in Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: April 27, 1952

Concordia Teachers College A Cappella Choir of River Forest, Ill., nationally-know choral group, appears in concert at State College auditorium in evening under auspices of Trinity Men's Club; choir is under direction of Victor Hildner.

Cape Girardeau County Taft forces, bolstered by senator's appearance here and at Jackson, scored decisive victory at party convention at Jackson Saturday, winning 13 of 14 delegates to 10th District conclave to be held May 10; party rally was marked by parliamentary tangles and frequent procedural and other clashes between Taft forces, who were by far in majority, and those for other candidates or undecided.

75 years ago: April 27, 1927

Floodwater from inundated sections of Southeast Missouri is expected to recede completely within next 10 days, barring unanticipated rise in Mississippi River; this is prediction of government engineers, based on rapid fall shown in river during past few days, and on prospects for even greater fall due to favorable weather conditions.

Practically unhampered by high stage of river, work on west approach to Cape Girardeau traffic bridge across Mississippi River has been progressing rapidly, and stretch of concrete and steel is quickly assuming shape; before actual approach can be built, it is necessary to construct an approach of frame material, on which concrete will be based, and this work is nearing completion.
