A proposed sales tax increase for soil conservation and state parks wins the praise of State Rep. Mary Kasten, R-Cape Girardeau; the House last week approved a joint resolution that would place before voters a 1/10 of a cent sales tax increase to benefit parks and soil conservation.

50 years ago: April 25, 1958

Automobiles valued at $92,927, both new and used, have been purchased from participating Cape Girardeau County dealers in the "You Auto Buy Now" campaign, which ends its first week; 66 automobiles have been sold.

Harley M. Lemmon, Texaco jobber for the past 12 years, will become a consignee for the company effective May 1; Lemmon will lease four stations he owns and his bulk plant to the Texas company in the exchange.

The Cape Girardeau School Board yesterday voted to place the tax levy of 25 cents on the $100 valuation before taxpayers once more; the same levy was defeated April 4 in the annual school election.

Cape Girardeau County will supply 68 men for the Civilian Conservation Corps — the emergency organization designed to help unemployment; they must be unmarried, between 18 and 25, and must agree to allot the major portion of their $30 monthly allowance to needy relatives.

100 years ago: April 25, 1908

Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Glenn and daughter departed yesterday for Kuttawa, Ky., to visit his brother and family; the visit is made especially to see their niece, now Mrs. Mable Barton, who will move to Wallace, Idaho, with her new husband.

The Broadway Bums, that baseball team that so distinguished itself last season, has organized for the summer and will play at Jackson tomorrow; playing for the Bums will be L. Bender, W. Leher, A. Muehlbach, J. Hobbs, L. Steck, R. Huebel, W. Hartung, T. Hohler and B. Huebel.
