The "Hoover Quartet" performs in the evening during a concert by the Southeast Missouri Symphonic Wind Ensemble at University Center; performing "A Grand, Grand Overture," by Malcolm Arnold, were Dean of the College of Humanities Dr. Fred B. Goodwin on soprano Dustbuster; university president Dr. Bill W. Stacy, alto Hoover; Vice President for Student Services Thomas J. Risch, tenor upright Hoover, and Southeast Indians football coach Bob Smith, bass shop vac.

Richard A. Behrens, who in his 14 years as Cape Girardeau city auditor has meant more to the city than a bevy of block grants, has announced his retirement, effective Tuesday.

50 years ago: April 23, 1960

The Missouri Public Service Commission has entered its objections with the Interstate Commerce Commission to the Frisco Railroad's proposal to abandon its remaining passenger service through Cape Girardeau and has asked that a public hearing on the matter be held here.

Thomas L. Meyer, a Cape Girardeau Democrat, has filed his name as a candidate for the office of public administrator of Cape Girardeau County; Meyer is a real estate dealer.

75 years ago: April 23, 1935

The Missourian's ninth annual cooking school opens in the afternoon at the Fox Broadway Theater, with Mrs. George Thurn as demonstrator; the school will continue through Friday.

With a special Federal Emergency Relief Administration allotment of $1,000 announced for Cape Girardeau County, employment on the various projects resumes again in the morning; about 400 men and women, idle since last Thursday, will be permitted to work at construction projects and in sewing rooms.

100 years ago: April 23, 1910

Hundreds of visitors are in Jackson attending the closing exercises of the pupils of the public schools of Cape Girardeau County; despite bad weather, representatives from all over the county are here; there are 78 graduates from the eighth grade in the county's rural schools this year, who are receiving their diplomas today.

Otto Hanny has been appointed city salesman for the Cape Brewery; he will do much toward keeping up the popularity of the home brew.
