PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- While the Perry County Commission is expected to approve construction of a new county jail in an area recommended before April's election, opposition to the site has developed since then; the jail would be located in south Perryville, about one-half mile from U.S. 61.

Lynn Morton has asked the Jackson Board of Aldermen to annex a 4.7-acre tract of land that is marked by U.S. 61 and Old Cape Road; the Jackson city limits would be 250 feet closer to Interstate 55 if the board approves the move.

50 years ago: April 22, 1961

The Cape Girardeau city engineer's office issued 13 building permits this week totaling $70,650; one of the permits was for construction of a warehouse for the Cape Electric Supply, 2119 Broadway; another was for remodeling the front of the Palmer House Restaurant, 417 Broadway.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The $50,000 needed to insure the establishment here of a plastics and sporting goods firm -- to employ 100 people -- has been raised, and construction of the plant will begin May 15.

75 years ago: April 22, 1936

More than 3,000 pupils, teachers, parents and friends will be in Cape Girardeau tomorrow through Saturday for the 36th annual Southeast Missouri High School Meet; the events will include literary, music, industrial, fine, domestic and commercial arts, as well as track and field contests.

The Cape Girardeau City Council has reduced the salaries of all members of the fire department; the move will allow the city to add one more fireman to the department.

100 years ago: April 22, 1911

The most serious fire the department has had to contend with for several month destroys the old cooperage shop on Merriwether Street, between Sprigg and Frederick streets; the building is covered with flames before the fire is discovered; there are several coopers working in the shop at the time; they confine their efforts to saving the large stock of hoops and staves from which they were making barrels.

The second baseball game between the Normals and the Ouachita College team of Arkadelphia, Ark., is replete with brilliant fielding and superior pitching, as the Normals shut out the visitors 3-0.
