Central Junior High School's Knowledge Master team placed first in the nation, for the second time in a national scholastic competition; the team answered 199 of 200 questions correctly to beat 340 other teams from around the nation.
Four people and one organization received awards yesterday at the first Bell Volunteer Awards ceremony; winners were Charles Miller, Ruth Hathaway, Jane Grimm, Harold Nothdurft, and the Junior Optimist Club.

COLDWATER, Mo. -- Diminished winds and higher humidity help firefighters bring the largest forest fire in recent history under control; the fire, which burned more than 3,330 acres east of here in Wayne and Madison counties yesterday and today, is finally encircled at 2:30 this morning, and new starts of the fire are brought under control by 4:30 p.m.
Workers have removed a box gutter along the top of the front of a building at 505 Broadway and are replacing it with a straight line gutter; they are also remodeling the front part of the roof, which was removed while repairing the front; Boren Bros. is doing the work for the Feldon Roofing Co.
The women's debate team of State Teachers College, composed of Ruby Barks and Audra Claypool, take the highest honors of the Pi Kappa Delta National Collegiate Debate Tournament, which concludes in the evening at Topeka, Kansas.
A team of horses hitched to one of the heavy oil wagons of the St. Louis Oil Co. gets scared while standing in front of the Vandeven store on Broadway in the morning; the runaway team is finally stopped in front of the Farmers and Merchants Bank at Sprigg and Good Hope streets; the driver had gone into Vandeven's and was there but a few minutes, when he came out and saw the team flying down Pacific Street.
