25 years ago: April 20, 1985

Stanley A. Grimm, outgoing chairman of the Southeast Missouri Hospital Board, handed over the gavel to his successor, Howard C. Tooke, Thursday night at the annual Southeast Missouri Hospital Association dinner held at the Arena Building.

B.I. Howard, who founded the Howard and Swan Store in Cape Girardeau, now known as Howard's, on Aug. 1, 1945, dies at age 86.

50 years ago: April 20, 1960

Elmo C. Martin, a member of the Missouri House of Representatives and a Jackson business man, files for the Democratic nomination for county assessor.

More than 60 delegates participate in the 10th Congressional District Republican Convention held in the Common Pleas Courthouse in the afternoon; the 11-county conclave is called to order by Congressional chairman Stone Manes, who is also chairman in Cape Girardeau County.

75 years ago: April 20, 1935

Joseph A. Holt, who lives in the extreme northern part of the county east of New Wells, while in Jackson, tells of a wolf pack roaming the hills along Apple Creek; the animals are becoming bold, making raids on Holt's chicken house.

Officials of the Sinclair Refining Co., all of St. Louis, are in Cape Girardeau to attend the formal opening of the company's new super-service station at Broadway and Main Street; Sam Boutin is the manager of the new station.

100 years ago: April 20, 1910

Fred Keller, 19, son of Henry Keller, a prominent farmer living about six miles northwest of Gordonville, was painfully injured yesterday by getting his right arm against a circular saw in a wood-sawing machine; one bone was sawed in two, and the arm was badly lacerated.

State Geologist H.E. Buehler spent several days last week in Cape Girardeau, Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties examining the promising iron and lead prospects in these counties.
