25 years ago: April 2, 1985

A preliminary hearing to gather ideas on the location of a bridge to replace the aging Mississippi River span here has been scheduled for May 14 at the Arena Building; the hearing is an initial step that could lead toward plans to build a new four-lane bridge here as soon as eight years from now.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications from county residents who would like to volunteer their time as members of the department's new reserve unit.

50 years ago: April 2, 1960

The big amphibious ducks based at the National Guard's motor pool in Cape Girardeau are being readied for service during the high stages of the Mississippi River in the area south of here; the ducks are capable of moving tons of people, livestock and household equipment from flooded areas, traveling through water and over land.

Robert Goins, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Goin of Chaffee, Mo., took the top National Science Fair Award in the fourth annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair at State College for his exhibit on magnetism; Goins repeated his triumph of two years ago.

75 years ago: April 2, 1935

After being closed yesterday and this morning, the Leming sawmill in South Cape Girardeau resumes work at noon and will continue until April 15 on the code basis; the collapse of the Code Authority in Washington last week threw the lumber manufacturing business into a turmoil, and sawmills throughout the country suspended operations.

Harry I. Himmelberger has been re-elected president of the Chamber of Commerce for another year by the group's board of directors.

100 years ago: April 2, 1910

F.W. Elbrecht has won the Jackson bowling championship from John Putz, beating him by 11 points; Putz has held the championship since the first of the year, his average being 256.

Two cars of poultry each week are being brought to Cape Girardeau by the Houck railroad from Jackson; one car then goes on to Chicago and the other one to New York.
