1989

Dr. Bill W. Stacy, president of Southeast Missouri State University, praises Sen. John C. Dennis for helping to restore almost a $900,000 House-Senate disparity to the university's tentative fiscal 1990 budget.

An agreement was reached yesterday that apparently clears the way for the sale of Lenco Inc., a Jackson manufacturing firm; the agreement resolves a legal dispute between Lenco owner Jerry W. Ford and George A. Todt, owner of Todt Industries in Cape Girardeau, over the proposed sale of Lenco to Todt.

1964

G. Walter Gerhardt, 70, an associate of the Gerhardt Construction Co. 53 years, dies at his home on Hopper Road; Gerhardt was a construction superintendent on many projects in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Mississippi; these included many Frisco Railroad stations and shops and The Missourian Building, among other Cape Girardeau projects.

At a meeting last night, members of the Southeast Missouri Hospital Association learned that a total of $124,850 has been raised in the preliminary phases of a campaign for $450,000 for half the cost of a 64-bed addition to the hospital.

1939

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- An intense earth tremor shakes New Madrid and vicinity at 11:25 a.m., lasting about two minutes; it is one of the most severe quakes in recent years; buildings sway noticeably, but no damage of consequence is reported.

Charles Bertrand, new manager of the Illmo-Fornfelt Big Bucks, says Camille Huber, who has been anchoring first place for several seasons, won't be playing for his club this year, as he will be attending summer school at the University of Missouri; in Huber's place will be Frank Hanks.

1914

Eli Seabaugh of St. Louis arrived in Jackson yesterday with his four-ton Packard automobile truck, which will now make regular trips between Jackson and Cape Girardeau; the machine makes a good appearance and seems to be built for hill climbing.

The Rev. Jacob Tanner, who was pastor of the German Methodist Episcopal Church here during the Civil War, is visiting Cape Girardeau and occupies the pulpit during the evening service; he left here in 1862, and this is his first visit back since that time; he lives in Smithton, Mo.
