Pressure from Jefferson School parents has caused the Cape Girardeau School Board to strike a proposal to bus eight students to Franklin School next year.

About 40 residents of the northern part of Cape Girardeau County who are caught in a boundary line dispute between the Jackson and Oak Ridge school districts appeared at a Jackson School Board meeting last night to seek its support in remaining within the Jackson district; the Oak Ridge district plans to file suit against the Jackson district to have the boundary lines changed.

50 years ago: April 15, 1962

Beginning with today's Palm Sunday observance, parishioners of St. Vincent's Catholic Church are joined by students of St. Vincent's College for Holy Week services; the choir, under the direction of the Rev. Francis Gagnepain, C.M., will sing the traditional Holy Week music.

Wearing white robes, 42 young people are confirmed in the morning at Trinity Lutheran Church.

75 years ago: April 15, 1937

When the new Lorimier School opens in the fall, it will accommodate 320 pupils, which should relieve crowding in other schools of the system; construction work on the new brick school is moving steadily forward; Brunson Construction Co. plans to pour concrete for the second story floor next week.

It is announced at the WPA office here that definite arrangements have been made for starting construction on the new park on U.S. 61 Monday morning; about 25 men will be used in the initial work, which will include clearing a part of a grove at the west side of the plot.

100 years ago: April 15, 1912

Harry L. Albert, a Cape Girardeau boy, who has been in St. Louis for the past three years, connected with the Biles & Co. firm and the Commercial Trust Co., has been elected president of the trust company.

Much excitement is generated at Dutchtown in the morning when fire destroys a saloon owned by Steve Penny; all is lost but about 15 pints of whiskey, which are carried out; the fire spreads to the blacksmith shop owned by Martin Daume, which is also destroyed; the blaze then advances to a warehouse but is extinguished before much damage can be done.
