B.W. Birk & Associates Inc. of Jackson is awarded the contract to build a new wastewater treatment system in Scott City by the board of aldermen; work should begin soon.

City attorney Fred Boeckmann tells the Cape Girardeau City Council a proposed ordinance to regulate the use of portable advertising signs in town could pose not only an enforcement problem but a legal one as well, since "you're dealing with free speech."

50 years ago: April 15, 1960

An application to sell at public auction the tract of land adjoining Arena Park on Kingshighway owned by the late Dr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Serena will be heard in Common Pleas Court next week; First National Bank, as Missouri administrator of the estate, filed the application after heirs asked that the 10.16 acres be sold at public auction.

Thirteen trophies will be up for grabs tomorrow in the first annual Cape Girardeau Relays to be held at Central High School's Lou Muegge Field; eight schools have entered teams in the 12-event relays.

75 years ago: April 15, 1935

A 6 a.m. whistle calls 250 men back to their jobs at the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. plant after it had been idle two months; the day is spent in getting up heat and making last-minute preparations for actual resumption of manufacturing, which will begin tomorrow morning.

An appropriation of $500 to help pay for the proposed paving of Lacey Street in front of Southeast Missouri Hospital and the drive around the hospital is asked of the city council by a committee made up of members of the hospital's board of trustees.

100 years ago: April 15, 1910

Yesterday's windstorm at Jackson did considerable damage to the home of Bill Mayer; it disconnected one of the porches from the house, blowing it into the street.

G.A. Cook of Sikeston, Mo., will come to Cape Girardeau next week to manage the Riverview Hotel; he will stay here until the new Commercial Hotel, now under construction in Sikeston, is completed.
