LOUIS -- Representatives of 20 cities in six of 11 states that would be along the route of a proposed new, east-west interstate highway expressed enthusiastic support for the project yesterday; after hearing a presentation by the Cape Girardeau Regional Commerce and Growth Association on the need for the 3,000-mile highway, plans were approved to use a not-for-profit corporation to promote the Interstate 66 project.

About 400 Southeast Missouri residents are expected to compete tomorrow in the regional Special Olympics at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.

Cape Girardeau changed administrations yesterday, with the outgoing city council conducting its final meeting and the new one holding its first.

Pyramid Roofing Co. of Sikeston, Mo., has been given the first contract in the renovation of the old junior high school building on Pacific Street; Pyramid's $16,343 bid calls for the roofing and installation of gutters, downspouts and flashing for the building.

Frances Lee of New York, a member of the Girl Scout national staff, arrives in Cape Girardeau at noon on her first visit to Missouri; during her two-day stay, she will meet with troops and leaders from Cape Girardeau and outlying towns; she will also attend a tea Saturday afternoon at the Hotel Marquette, to which heads of various women's organizations have been invited.

Sixteen pupils of the Arnsberg, Mo., school, accompanied by their teacher, Glenn Tacke, and bus driver, Archie Hahs, spend the day touring Cape Girardeau; among stops they make are Cape Rock, The Missourian building, the Teachers College and the new arena building.

After waiting in vain until after 8 last night for a sufficient number of old city councilmen to appear to form a quorum, the new councilmen were sworn in by city clerk G.E. Chappell.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Northern train that left Farmington, Mo., in the morning for Perryville Junction is wrecked at a point near Blue Spring trestle; one of the coaches leaves the track and, before the passengers have time to think, rolls over into the ditch.
