The new community hall of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Timon Council, No. 6405, will be dedicated April 21, with Bishop John Leibrecht officiating.

Ralph Tomlinson and his wife, Gaymarie, have purchased a two-story building at 45 N. Main St. from Charles Turner; they plan to renovate the structure and open an exclusive dance and ballet school there; it will be known as the Royale Ballet and School of Performing Arts.

50 years ago: April 14, 1960

Cooperative efforts that paid off so well in protecting the International Shoe Co. plant, the Missouri Utilities Co. power plant and other industry, business and residences from flooding cost a preliminary estimate of $6,119; the levee is considered permanent; it was well built, solidly compacted and doesn't interfere with any business or industrial operation.

Cape Girardeau's protest to the Interstate Commerce Commission of the Frisco Railroad's application to abandon its daytime passenger service through the city has gone unanswered; the city sent the commission a letter March 28 detailing its protest and urging a public hearing of the matter.

75 years ago: April 14, 1935

Palm Sunday is observed at churches in Cape Girardeau, including the blessing of palms and processions at St. Mary's and St. Vincent's Catholic churches.

Robert Blattner, Irene and Edwin Heise and Carrie Lee Hopper are confirmed at the morning worship service at Christ Evangelical Church.

100 years ago: April 14, 1910

Eddie Schindler and Henry Sanders, proprietors of the Commercial Barber Shop, have received a post from Gene Sullivan showing him in Havana, Cuba, with a bunch of other sailors on their recreation day; Sullivan is now a machinist in the Navy and is with the Atlantic fleet, training between New York and Cuba.

Mrs. A.R. Ponder and little son arrive here from Texas for a visit with many friends; her husband has been here several days, and the family is staying with Mayor and Mrs. M.E. Leming.
