The Census Bureau says the city of Cape Girardeau is growing, but just barely; according to recently released figures, Cape Girardeau had a population of 34,483 as of July 1, 1982, an increase of only 122 residents over the 1980 count.

Confusion abounds over the name of the small Cape Girardeau County town of Delta; Laclede County has a town name Delto, and letters from one are constantly being sent to the other; adding to the confusion is the fact that Delta is also known as Deray by the post office.
Dr. W.C. Patton turns over the reins of Cape Girardeau's city government to Merit E. Leming, who takes the oath of office as mayor; councilmen D.A. Glenn, George Meyer, J.A. Juden and A. Brunkhorst are also sworn in.
