50 years ago: April 13, 1955

Openings still exist in a contemplated fourth flight to become a pay component of the 9671st Air Reserve Squadron, says M-Sgt. Arthur W. Garber, the Air Force's liaison representative with the unit; 18 commissioned officers have signed for reserve service with the unit, but a minimum of seven more must become members before the flight can be activated.

Workers are razing the old Ed Ruehmann dwelling on North Frederick Street; the brick structure was built many years ago as the city, just north of Independence Street, was developed.

75 years ago: April 13, 1930

Palm Sunday services, marking the beginning of Holy Week, are held at a number of Cape Girardeau churches; special services will continue through the week in many congregations.

The Rev. Al. Mendenhall, formerly pastor of First Christian Church in Cape Girardeau, now residing at Aurora, Mo., preaches morning and evening sermons at the First Presbyterian Church; Mendenhall is contemplating going into evangelistic work.

100 years ago: April 13, 1905

One of the best pieces of work ever done by artisans in Cape Girardeau is the remodeling of the Riverview Hotel, which is about compete; this hotel was destroyed by fire last month, and many thought an entire new building would be necessary; however, contractor C.M. Lee succeeded in making a modern hotel out of the shell that remained.

After a long number of years of idleness, the once-famous Ludwig brewery at Appleton will be put in service again this summer, producing a genuine German brew for thirsty locals.
