New Trends in Agriculture extravaganza that was established in Cape Girardeau in 1988 has disbanded; annual event, which had already been scheduled at Show Me Center for July 14-15, was canceled recently when three of sponsors announced their withdrawal from event.

Astronaut Linda Godwin has been selected as payload commander of space shuttle flight scheduled in September 1993; Godwin, Jackson High School graduate, was in Southeast Missouri this week to talk with students and participate in Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair; she will present E.L. Bahn Memorial Lecture this evening at Show Me Center.

25 years ago: April 1, 1977

Group of more than 100 west end businessmen affected by Sunday's flash flood met with city council yesterday to demand immediate steps be taken to correct conditions they feel contribute to flooding of their property; at times hostile, some in group accused city of doing nothing to aid them despite requests made over many years.

Lee Hollis, for two years member of staff of The Tiger, Central High School newspaper, was named ninth recipient of The Missourian's annual Award for Journalistic Achievement last night.

School board members are examining possibility of obtaining waivers for construction of new high school building, after it was revealed Monday that dedication of Oak Park subdivision, site of structure, limits building to residences only; problem is technical one only and presents no legal complications that will interfere with construction, according to board's attorney, Jack O. Knehans

John Adams, head coach of basketball and assistant coach at State College past three years, handed in his resignation to President W.W. Parker Monday, effective June 1; Adams plans to enter business.

75 years ago: April 1, 1927

Heavy rainstorms, which at some points reach almost cloudburst proportions, bring new threat of danger to already-flooded areas of this district, disrupt rail and other transportation facilities, and again swell Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau and adjacent points.

With time for filing of names for candidates for board of education of Cape Girardeau Public Schools expiring at noon tomorrow, list stands at six, from which voters will select two at election Tuesday; candidates are J.T. Hulehan, E.A. Caton, James A. Arnold, Edward L. Drum, E.P. Ellis and Ernest Miller.
