Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents president Kenneth Dement appears on the CBS television program "60 Minutes"; Dement, a Sikeston, Mo., native, was interviewed last fall by the program for a segment concerning the tire rim industry and the manufacturing of potentially dangerous truck rims; Dement was involved in a lawsuit several years ago, in which he won a large settlement against a tire company for manufacturing defective rims.
The Southeast Missouri State University dance marathon, which ends today at Houck Field House, raises $16,015 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; Laurie Watkins of St. Louis and Steve Moeckle of Brentwood, Mo., take first place.
The Cape Girardeau County Board of Education met last night at the Jackson courthouse, and interviews were held with two delegations; the first was from Old Appleton School District, who sought to not divide the district, but include it in its entirety in a Perry County reorganization program; the other delegation was from Stroderville community, and it sought to change some boundaries before the proposed reorganization plan is submitted to the state Department of Education.
Fred Elfrank Jr., of Sikeston, Mo., has purchased the Cape Coal Co., 44 S. Frederick St., from Elmer Shrout.
The Rev. J.W. Newson, for some time pastor of the Second Baptist Church at Blytheville, Ark., has accepted a call as pastor of the Baptist Church at Illmo; he was succeeded as pastor at Blytheville by his brother, the Rev. J.L. Newman, who was employed by the church just 20 minutes after the other's resignation had been accepted.
The Rev. W.J. Gammon, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Jackson, lectures in the evening at the First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau; his lecture, "Christ on Stewardship," is illustrated with stereopticon slides.
Several hundred subscribers of The Daily Republican yesterday received only a two-page edition, the press having broken before the whole run could be completed; today's edition is printed on the Cross Printing Co. press; mended pieces of The Republican's press should arrive from St. Louis in time for tomorrow's newspaper.
Members of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club hold an interesting meeting; receiving the most attention is the proposition of G.W. Ward of Veedersburg, Ind., to move his handle factory here.
