Former Southeast Missouri State University basketball standout Arvin Haynes and his wife, Cathy, conduct a special service at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Cape Girardeau; Haynes graduated from Southeast in 1976 and traveled two years with a semiprofessional "Athletes for Christ" basketball team from Illinois.

Rep. Bill Emerson has announced that Peter Kinder has left his congressional staff office in Washington to manage his 1982 re-election campaign.

50 years ago: March 7, 1957

The first move toward development of Trail of Tears State Park is initiated with a tour of the area by two representatives of the Harland Bartholomew planning firm of St. Louis for a survey to implement facilities outlined at a meeting yesterday.

Holy Family Catholic School's hoop team has completed an undefeated season in the Private School Basketball League; members of the team are Claude Bedell, Coy Clemmons, Douglas Nelson, Jerry Jenkins, Cornell Sides, John Jenkins, Donald Mitchell, Ollie Taylor and Walter Johnson, manager.

75 years ago: March 7, 1932

A dash of winter brought suffering to Southeast Missouri this weekend, cold winds pressing the mercury to 13 degrees last night in Cape Girardeau; it is believed the temperatures will do great damage to the 1932 peach crop.

August H. Rodemayer writes his brother-in-law, Silas P. Lail, from Shanghai that he and other volunteers have landed there with American troops to guard American citizens and property.

100 years ago: March 7, 1907

The remaining goods of the Kaminer clothing store are being moved to the vacant room just north of Bahn Bros.' hardware store on Main Street in Cape Girardeau; a final sale will begin Saturday.

The difficulty between the architect of the new courthouse at Jackson and the contractors has been patched up; Herman Rabich, who represents the architect, and the contractors, M.T. Lewman & Co., couldn't agree on the monthly estimate of how much work was done and how much money the county owed the contractors.
