Professor William T. Doherty, for 37 years a member of the State College faculty and the head of the history department since its inception, died unexpectedly yesterday.

Members of the Cape Girardeau Camp No. 34 of Spanish War Veterans hold the last meeting of their dwindling ranks, with seven members present; the camp has 13 members, living all over Southeast Missouri, but not all are able to attend the final session; attending are camp commander P.N. Keller, 79, of Chaffee, Mo.; C.M. Barnes, 82, of Marston, Mo.; C.T. Berry, 80, of Cape Girardeau; C.J. Winningham, 81, of Jackson; Pearl C. Holt, 79, of Braggadocio, Mo., and Walter M. Hartman, 76, and F.S. Bice, 77, both of Oran, Mo.

75 years ago: March 4, 1931

Fire originating in the bedroom of a three-room frame dwelling occupied by Mr. and Mrs. William Ulrich, 404 N. Boulevard, in Cape Girardeau causes about $2,000 damage to the building and furnishings; the house is gutted and is virtually a complete loss, while all personal belongings of the couple, with the exception of a few bedclothes, are lost.

Plans are being made to move equipment of the Sugar Creek Creamery Co., 714 William St., in Cape Girardeau, by March 15 into its new plant at the southwest corner of South Sprigg and Merriwether streets.

100 years ago: March 4, 1906

The ladies of the Presbyterian Church have placed an order for a magnificent pipe organ; the ladies have been working for a long time to raise the amount of $2,000, which they used to purchase a Kirgin organ from a St. Louis, Mo., firm; the contract calls for the installation of the instrument by June 1.

Alma Juden, a teacher in the Lorimier School in Cape Girardeau, resigned her position and went to St. Louis yesterday, where she will take a job in the Valley Park School.
